This morning, Pershing Square was closed down for a brief time in the early morning when a bomb threat was called in. The station was re-opened shortly before 6 a.m. While teh L.A. Times failed to figure out what was going on mere blocks from its building, other newspapers outside of Los Angeles were on top of the story as it unfolded.
It was, according to LAPD, a fake threat. Perhaps some schmuck got pissed off at the sheriff's deputies bag searches on Monday, or the fare checking party in Pershing Square that has marked the first half of the week. Then again, it should not be discounted that it is an odd coincidence that after years of not doing bag searches in the wake of 9/11, and the Los Angeles Sheriff's contract with Metro to end early next week, and the sudden campaign of bag searches as well as the opportunity for LASD to implicitly discredit the TAP card programme (that was the reason stated by deputies that were at Pershing Square in early March: problems with the TAP cards) it may well have been someone other than some crazy straphanger calling in a bullshit bomb threat. It would not be the first time today that Baca's boys and girls were incredibly stupid and/or criminally mischievous.

Hey, when there is a bomb scare don't you start earning time and a half or something? All the reserve units can get called up, and everyone is making money on their "off" days. Sweet deal is you all know it's a phony threat!

The sheriff called in the threat. I heard that when there is a bomb threat they serve nachos back at headquarters and everybody gets a Target gift card.
