So I've been kind of MIA, but that doesn't mean that I haven't been riding public transit (oh trust me, I ride lots of public transit). Nor does it mean that public transit hasn't been near my heart.
Over the past two months, I have become a transit advocate through a new student organization at UCLA called Bruins for Traffic Relief (BTR). BTR was founded by an intrepid undergrad named Misha Silin who noticed one evening last spring that there were no formal outlets to truly advocate for transit improvements at the University. Since then, I've worked with our board to ramp up membership and our marketing.
Our short-term goals include telling as many people about Measure R, the half-cent sales tax initiative. This has included taking to the streets. Before the Yes on Measure R folks started airing their ads, seven BTR members walked along Wilshire Boulevard between Westwood and Veteran. It was actually a lot of fun. A lot of people honked their horns and gave a thumbs up in support. (Two gave me a thumbs down; either they are mean-spirited or attended USC). Also, I talked to pedestrians and commuters waiting for the 720 at Wilshire & Westwood. It's always so interesting to me to learn how and why people are using transit to get to and from their homes.
Anyway, we are going to be out on Wilshire between Westwood and Veteran every Friday until Election Day. If you pass us by, say or wave hi!
